Half garage, half new room: this conversion in Winkfield, Berkshire, splits a bare blockwork garage in two, creating a warm, bright room at the back of the house while keeping useful garage space at the front. A new timber stud partition wall was built and insulated to divide the space, with a smart grey door leading through to the garage, and a raised timber floor was laid over the old concrete with foil-faced insulation between the joists for a warm, level finish.
The walls and ceiling were plasterboarded, plastered and painted in a soft neutral tone, with crisp white skirting and architraves throughout. LED downlights are set into the new ceiling alongside a neatly finished loft hatch, and plenty of new sockets have been added. Light wood-effect flooring runs right through to the patio door, chosen to tie in with the flooring in the rest of the house. The remaining garage was finished with plastered walls and skirting, giving the homeowners the best of both: a comfortable, versatile room that feels like part of the home, plus practical garage storage at the front.
